Crystal Cabin Award 2019 - The finalists

The Crystal Cabin Award is one of the most coveted seals of quality in the global aviation industry. The finalists have now been decided for each of the eight categories.
 

The Crystal Cabin Award is one of the most coveted seals of quality in the global aviation industry. The finalists have now been decided for each of the eight categories. Competition was never tougher for the 24 places in the finals. The international expert jury viewed and evaluated some 94 shortlisted entries. Airlines, manufacturers, suppliers and universities from all around the world have made it to the last round.

 

Cabin Concepts 1. Airbus and Zodiac:
Lower Deck Pax Experience Modules Long haul flights in economy class for family holidays offer food and drink as needed, and entertainment with movies, games and music. Urgent work can be completed on board before fully disconnecting for leisure time. However, sleeping comfort has seen no evolution for decades, and is equivalent to a night in a car with the engine on. And, as very long haul flights are developing, will stretching area be requested?
 
The Lower Deck Modules are based on a flexible concept using the aircraft cargo hold, switching from passenger compartment to freight and vice-versa in a short timeframe, while maintaining full capacity. The compartments are of different sizes and could offer bunks, a stretching area or a playground area. Airlines can maximise revenues per aircraft by configuring the aircraft according to route, season and cargo business.
 
The two companies say they will make it happen through a tripartite partnership and a test phase in real operations. Firstly, Zodiac and Airbus will combine their complementary expertise to develop the product, and are ready to share the risk and benefits of such an innovation. Secondly, customers will be invited to define which applications best serve their interest and those of their passengers. Finally, a test phase will verify passenger demand and confirm the flexibility of quick change operations.
 
2. Emirates:
First Class Fully Enclosed Suites Emirates has recently introduced fully enclosed private suites in first class. With floor to ceiling sliding doors and design features inspired by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class car, offering up to 3.7m² of personal space, laid out in a 1-1-1 configuration. The soft leather seat reclines into fully flat bed and can be placed in a ‘zero gravity’ position inspired by NASA technology, giving a feeling of relaxation and weightlessness. There is ample space for passengers to change in privacy. To ensure all First Class customers have a view, Emirates is introducing the industry’s first virtual windows for suites located in the middle aisle. These virtual windows project the view from outside the aircraft using real time camera technology. Passengers can easily communicate with the cabin crew, or request for room service using the video call function. The suites also come with a service window where customers can be served undisturbed. Boeing, Rockwell Collins Interior Systems, Panasonic, Pierrejean Design Studio and Seattle-based design firm Teague were also involved.
 
3. Safran:
Essential The Essential is a new solution that offers a major weight reduction (25%) achieved by rethinking what a business class seat has to be, while dramatically simplifying operations for airlines and increasing the overall quality of the business class experience. The company says it is the vision of a seat that will match the comfort of existing products while removing the drawbacks it has picked up along the way. The world is at a turning point. Our actions have left a trace that has been building up, and we can now start to feel their effects and wonder what we can expect in the future. While automobiles have become more efficient and reduced their emissions, air travel has kept steadily growing and therefore increased its contribution of harmful emissions. There is a challenge ahead to figure out how to minimise that impact where every small improvement matters.
 
CABIN SYSTEMS
 
1. Airbus Operations:
X-Tend Seat Single aisle aircraft are equipped with Over Wing Exits (OWE), located above both wings, and to be used in case of emergency evacuation. The spacing between the seat rows in these areas is larger, about 38in seat pitch to achieve an aisle width of up to 13in leading to the exit, compared with a seat pitch down to 28in in the rest of the cabin. At the OWE area, the new X-Tend Seat can reduce the seat pitch up to 5in down to 33in.
 
This will be achieved by the unique solution of automatically folding down the forward part of the seat pan and seat bottom cushion as soon as the seat is not used, while the passenger comfort is not negatively impacted. Airlines gain up 10in in an A320 or A321ACF (Airbus Cabin Flex) layout with two OWEs, which can be used individually, for example, to allow installation of additional seat rows or to be used for more passenger comfort.
 
2. Collins Aerospace:
M-Flex Duet M-Flex Duet is a cabin monument taking advantage of the underutilised space in aircraft doorways to provide a flexible self-serve social zone. Currently, many premium self-serve areas require removing seats to add differentiated service monuments, costing airlines significant six figure costs in revenue annually. M-Flex Duet is a transforming monument that follows the phases of flight. During Taxi, Take-off and Landing, the monuments are stowed and compact - meeting all regulatory egress requirements. Inflight, the units unfold to stretch across the doorway, providing a stand up branded self-serve social area for passengers to enjoy, and additional crew working space. It offers new opportunities to increase airline ancillary revenues with buy-on-board premium products, food and beverages, and provides passengers with control to use it when they desire.
 
3. Diehl Aviation:
flexPSU Today, PSUs need to be connected with thick and inflexible wiring, which make reconfiguration and relocation very expensive, cumbersome, and often impossible. flexPSU changes this situation as it is a rail system that allows full mobility and flexibility. Just three connections ensure full connectivity – power, communication and individual addressing of each unit. Due to the rail system, which is integrated into the overhead bins, the flexPSU can be relocated in just a few simple steps.
 
Installation, configuration, and reconfiguration are done in minutes. Easy and fast installation, reduction in aircraft manufacturing costs, weight reduction due to less cabling and easy retrofit are just a few advantages for OEMs and operators. Passengers benefit from more functionality and higher comfort. The flexPSU is an intelligent system which is available in two versions: a cost effective version featuring standard functions, and a high performance solution with enhanced functions like seat monitoring, temperature control and passenger guidance. Switching between both versions is simple and done quickly.
 
GREENER CABIN, HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT
 
1. Air New Zealand:
Skycouch Infant and Child Improvements Designed by Air New Zealand, the Skycouch is a row of three seats that can be turned into a couch after take off, offering families, couples and those just wanting a bit more personal space the freedom to choose how they fly. Observations were made that the youngest travellers were often laid down unrestrained, and so new enhancements for customers travelling with infants aged 0-2 are a new Infant Pod and Turbulence Management Device and an improved Skycouch Cuddle Belt.
 
Air New Zealand consulted with Plunket NZ and Whakawhetu (a National Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy Programme) as well as its own medical unit in the development of these products. The Pod is based on existing and proven automotive technology, and uses low maintenance and flame-resistant materials. The Skycouch Cuddle Belt, which was previously only certified to allow two adults or an adult and child travelling together to lie down side by side, has also been updated to allow two children to use it, providing greater flexibility to families.
 
The Economy Skycouch attracts a higher revenue yield because passengers will pay more for the flexible product features. They particularly value the benefit of lying down and also having a dedicated space for children to stretch out, to either relax or play. The additional revenue earned through Skycouch is expected to be further enhanced by the new improvements.
 
2. Diehl Aviation:
UV LED Water Disinfection Unit The water disinfection unit is based on UVC LEDs with a wavelength emission optimized for efficient elimination of germs. Meaning that at least 99.99% of germs are killed. UVC LEDs are small, robust, and consume low power. They enable great freedom in the design of compact point of use disinfection units, and are easy to integrate close to or directly into the faucet. The new technology is maintenance-free relying on UV LEDs with an expected lifespan of more than 10,000 operating hours. The unit protects the water system against back contamination, which reduces effort and costs for maintenance of the entire water system.
 
3. Panasonic: nanoe
As part of Panasonic’s Wellness initiative, it plans to introduce a new product for first and business class passengers called nanoe to improve the passenger environment by making it healthier, cleaner and safer. Panasonic has designed nanoe as a module that is easily integrated into the seat structure to eliminate odours and improve air quality for the passenger by suppressing airborne and surface viruses, bacteria, mould, pollutants and allergens. This proven technology has already been deployed by a number of luxury car manufacturers, and Panasonic has done significant work to make it offerable on commercial aircraft with an entry into service planned for 2021. >>
